Castellum Hoge Woerd is a striking, contemporary reconstruction of a Roman fortress. The reconstruction is located at the exact location of the remains in the ground and has the same circumference and height of the ramparts as the original.
More than 2000 years ago Roman soldiers guarded the river Rhine from this fortress. The Castellum is located right next to the Limes: the former northern border of the Roman Empire. Today, in this historic place full of archaeological treasures, culture, nature and history come together in a unique way through the archaeological museum, theater, city farm and café-restaurant that are located within the walls of the fortress.
Moreover, the Castellum is situated right on the limes (Roman frontier) in the Netherlands, which was recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage. Read more under the heading 'Roman Limes'.
